Banco Santander is the largest banking group in the euro zone and fourth largest in Europe by market capitalization, which stood at 69.7 billion euros at the end of 2005. Headquartered near Madrid, Santander specializes in retail banking, consumer finance, wholesale banking and asset management and insurance in Europe and Latin America. The group traces its roots to the founding of Banco de Santander in 1857, and is one of the founding members of The IBOS Association.

Santander is the largest banking group by assets in Spain and in Latin America, and the sixth largest in the U.K. and the third in Portugal. Through its Santander Consumer Finance division, Santander is a leader in Consumer finance in Europe, with operations in Spain, Germany, Italy and ten other European countries. At the end of 2005, the group had 129,196 employees, of which half were based in Europe and half in Latin America.
