The role of Additional Banks in IBOS is to provide banking services within the countries they cover, concentrating on account opening and local paying and receiving.

The scope of the service is defined by the limitations of the environment: within that environment the IBOS bank is a prominent player.

The cross-border service that is available is likely to be limited to Previous-Day electronic statements and the ability to empty or top-up the account from abroad. This last service is likely to be subject to exchange controls and/or the need to provide paper documentation to legitimise the payment.

The typical characteristics of an Additional Bank are:

  • The bank is properly licensed in that country
  • It is a leading bank in that country
  • The country itself is either small or major companies have only small operations there
  • There are major obstacles to enabling cash in that country to be mobilised by the customer within a regional scheme
